Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville is refusing to retreat from his extraordinary prediction that President Donald Trump will resign from office next year, insisting Vice President JD Vance will take over the White House by April.
Carville revisited his forecast Thursday during his Politicon podcast after listeners asked what a Vance presidency could look like if Trump actually stepped down.
Rather than soften his previous claim, Carville went further, predicting that Vance “will be president next April” and would inherit a severely weakened Republican administration with little ability to accomplish its goals.
“It’s a good question. And first of all, if I’m correct on it, if what happens is going to happen,” Carville began.
The longtime Democratic strategist argued that Trump’s political power was already declining. He claimed that while everyone once had to pay attention to Trump and return his phone calls, the president’s influence was beginning to fade.
“He is down to 50.5 in South Carolina, in Oklahoma,” Carville said.
Carville also predicted major Republican losses in the midterm elections, arguing that Vance would enter the presidency without control of Congress.
“And Vance, when this happens and Vance becomes president, he’s definitely not going to have the House, also I don’t think he’s going to have the Senate,” Carville said.
According to Carville, Vance would immediately face lame-duck status because less than two years would remain in Trump’s term. He also predicted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio would begin “sniping” at Vance as the Republican Party struggled with internal divisions.
“And then the whole Republican Party is going to fall apart when they lose all these seats because they’re going to know that Trump doesn’t protect him,” Carville continued.
The Democratic strategist offered a particularly harsh assessment of the hypothetical administration.
“So JD Vance, in my opinion, will be president next April,” Carville said. “He will be the most constrained, ineffective, babbling president in the history of the United States.”
Thursday’s remarks marked at least the third time Carville has publicly advanced the prediction.
In June, Carville insisted that he genuinely believed Trump would choose to resign rather than continue serving under political constraints created by Democratic victories in the midterm elections.
“I’m not doing this as a crazy a– prediction,” Carville said at the time. “I’m going that because I genuinely think that he will resign next spring.”
Carville later attached a more specific deadline to his forecast, predicting that Trump would leave office by Easter 2027.
“I’m telling you, this guy, by Easter of 2027, is just gonna walk away from this job,” he said.
