Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina is facing backlash after calling for the “public execution” of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts mother charged in the deaths of her three young children, during a fiery sit-down with TMZ DC.
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, admitted to killing her children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan — with exercise bands in the basement of her Duxbury home back in January 2023. Her defense argued she wasn’t criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder. Her murder trial ended in a mistrial earlier this month after the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of acquittal.
Clancy’s attorney, Kevin Reddington, recently asked President Trump to pardon his client — a request Trump declined, calling the situation “very sad” but ultimately a “state situation,” since the charges are being handled at the state, not federal, level.
Mace didn’t hold back when discussing the pardon request with TMZ DC’s Jacob Wasserman, calling it a “publicity stunt” and pointing out that, as an attorney, Reddington should know a federal pardon can’t apply to a state case.
But Mace went much further, telling Wasserman flatly that Clancy “should be dead too.” When pressed for clarification, she doubled down repeatedly, saying Clancy deserves the “electric chair” or death by firearm in a public setting.
“It should be public. It should be a warning to women everywhere,” Mace said. “You don’t kill your kids.”
When Wasserman noted her comments seemed “a little out of bounds,” Mace pushed back hard, insisting she stood by every word — and adding that child rapists should face the same fate.
The remarks are already generating intense reaction online, with critics calling the comments extreme and out of step for a sitting member of Congress, even amid widespread public horror over the case itself. Mace’s office has not walked back the comments.
The case remains one of the most closely watched and emotionally charged criminal matters in the country, with the mistrial leaving open the question of whether Clancy will face a retrial.
