Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) reportedly expressed agreement with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent critique of the Democratic Party, acknowledging that the party’s brand is “problematic.”

During an episode of HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Newsom described the Democratic brand as “toxic,” citing polls indicating favorability ratings below 30%.

In an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” host Kristen Welker noted the weight of Newsom’s comments and inquired if Bennet felt similarly.

Bennet affirmed that the party is often associated with “educated elites” from places like New York and California, which alienates them from working-class Americans.

He emphasized that this disconnect is detrimental as the party navigates its future. Additionally, Bennet’s comments highlight broader concerns within the party about its image and electability.

Other Democrats have also reacted to Newsom’s remarks. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) responded on social media, emphasizing that the Democratic Party should not be labeled as “toxic” and that the focus should be on addressing current issues posed by President Trump, rather than criticizing the party.

Khanna urged Democrats to communicate their achievements and lay out a future vision.

Bennet also remarked on the need for the Democratic Party to rise to the challenge and earn back public trust amid current political dynamics, particularly in comparison to Trump’s economic and healthcare policies.

He believes Democrats should articulate a strong case for being better leaders than Trump in these areas, advocating for comprehensive solutions like universal healthcare.

Ending on a hopeful note, Bennet insisted that with creativity and teamwork, the Democratic Party could improve its standing and better serve the American people, focusing on issues critical to their constituents.
