Joe Biden has called in for reinforcements. The struggling president has been trailing former president Donald Trump in the polls for weeks as Democrats have splintered over his moderate support for Israel, forcing him to abandon Americans held hostage by Hamas in hopes of not losing Trump to Michigan.
To help him raise more money in New York City, Biden has called on his two Democratic predecessors for support.
USA Today writes:
As President Joe Biden works to unite all factions of the Democratic Party, his campaign will get an assist Thursday night from two former presidents who know a thing or two about winning reelection and rallying the base.
Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will co-headline a high-dollar fundraiser at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall that the Biden campaign said will raise at least $25 million − easily the most lucrative fundraiser of the election cycle. More than 5,000 supporters are expected at the sold-out event.
Yet perhaps even more critical than the mountain of cash, the rare showing of three Democratic presidents presents a united front to help Biden bring together a Democratic coalition that’s shown signs of splintering.
Despite easily securing the Democratic nomination, polling has shown Biden is underperforming among Black and Latino voters compared to the 2020 election, while some within the progressive wing of the party have held off support due to his support of Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip.
While Biden mingles with Clinton and Obama, Trump will also be in New York City. The former president is slated to attend the wake for slain police officer Jonathan Diller.
“President Trump is moved by the invitation to join NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller’s family and colleagues as they deal with his senseless and tragic death,” Karoline Leavitt, Trump’s campaign spokesperson, said in a statement on Wednesday.
The New York Post reported that “Diller, a 31-year-old married dad, was on patrol in Far Rockaway on Monday when he was shot and mortally wounded by a ruthless ex-con and his career criminal pal, according to police.
In an exclusive interview with The Post’s Michael Goodwin earlier this month, Trump blamed the “radical lunatic left” for ruining American cities.
‘The local police are not allowed to do their jobs anymore,’ Trump said from Mar-a-Lago.
In just three years on the job, Diller had more than 70 busts under his belt and was part of what relatives called ‘the real Blue Bloods family’ — a reference to the hit CBS hit series about a family of Big Apple police officers.”
Diller’s brother-in-law and cousin are both in law enforcement.
