New polling indicates that President Biden has gained six points in a fictitious head-to-head matchup with former President Trump, amidst indications of a widening gender disparity in support for the two party front-runners.
A new national poll conducted by Quinnipiac University found that Biden has the support of 50% of registered voters, compared to 44% for Trump.
This is a change in perspective for the incumbent, as it differs from December, when Quinnipiac deemed the identical Biden-Trump hypothetical “too close to call,” with Biden receiving 47% of the vote and Trump receiving 46%.
According to the most recent polls, Biden also received majority support among independents, with 52% supporting him compared to 40% for Trump.
In addition, the survey revealed a widening gender disparity in support for the incumbent and former presidents as they vie for a second term in office.
The percentage of women who support Biden has increased from 53% in December to 58% at present.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Biden encounters a limited number of unlikely challengers on the Democratic front, whereas the Republican race has narrowed to Trump and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley in a two-person contest.
Haley is clinging to her position notwithstanding entreaties from numerous party members for support to coalesce behind the former president.
She is relying on an electability argument, citing polling data indicating that she is performing better against Biden than Trump.
The nationwide survey of 1,650 self-identified registered electors was surveyed by Quinnipiac on January 25-26. The margin of error for the estimate was 2.4 percentage points.
