In a shocking new poll conducted by News Nation, nearly a third of Republicans claim they would support disqualifying Donald Trump from the ballot if he’s convicted of a crime.
Speaking with Mick Mulvaney, one of President Trump’s top advisers during his time in the White House, News Nation host Markie Martin discussed the ramifications of the poll and how it could impact the general election.
This is the second time that a large portion of the GOP electorate shared concerns about Trump potentially being convicted in 2024. In August, nearly a majority of Republicans told a Reuters survey that they would not vote for Donald Trump “if he were convicted of a felony, a sign of the severe risks his legal problems pose for his 2024 U.S. presidential bid.
Among Republicans, 45% said they would not vote for him, more than the 35% who said they would. The rest said they didn’t know.
Asked if they would vote for Trump if he were ‘currently serving time in prison,’ 52% of Republicans said they would not, compared to 28% who said they would.”
Trump is currently facing over 90 criminal charges related to the 2020 election and his alleged mishandling of classified documents. He is also facing a civil fraud trial in New York connected to his business empire.
Winning the presidency might be the president’s best way to avoid a conviction. The former president’s defense attorney in Atlanta said that if Trump returns to the White House 2025 election, he would not be subject to a criminal trial in Georgia until after his second term in office.
“I believe that the [Constitution’s] supremacy clause and his duties as president of the United States — this trial would not take place at all until after his term in office,” Trump’s attorney Steve Sadow said.
Despite his legal problems, Trump has maintained a healthy lead in the Republican primary.
