President Volodymyr Zelensky invited former president Donald Trump to visit Ukraine so he could see the scope of the country’s ongoing war against Russia, but Trump turned him down.
In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Zelenksky invited Trump to fulfill his promise to end the country’s conflict with Russia in “24 hours”—a promise he has made repeatedly that he claims he will fulfill if he retakes the White House in 2024.
“I have great respect for President Zelenskyy, but think it would be inappropriate to go to Ukraine at this time. The Biden administration is currently dealing with him, and I would not want to create a conflict of interest.” Trump said in a statenent.
If re-elected to the White House, Trump, who is presently leading the race for the Republican nominee for president in 2024, has stated he may negotiate a settlement between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the foreign conflict “one day.”
Trump has criticized the United States’ backing for the war, claiming that the Biden administration’s actions have caused a “reckless escalation” in the situation in Ukraine.
President Joe Biden issued an executive order in July allowing up to 3,000 US military reservists to visit Europe and assist NATO in putting an end to hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
This is happening at a time when Ukraine has received almost $350 billion in foreign aid, $113 billion of which has come from the United States and has been essential to its ongoing war effort.
