Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama), who is responsible for halting more than 360 military promotions and creating a standoff that has kept the Senate busy for months, asserted the Democrats were the ones who “created” the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
More than 300 military nominations have been held up because of a protest lodged by Tuberville against the abortion policy of the Department of Defense (DOD).
“They need to be worried about what’s going on in Ukraine, the Middle East, the wars that their side, the Democrats and Joe Biden, have created but you know, they want to circumvent the rules in the Senate,” Tuberville said during a recent interview with Newsmax.
“This administration, Bianca, has screwed everything up in our country. They’ve screwed everything up all over the world since they’ve been in. It’s a disaster.” he continued.
Democrats are planning to utilize a resolution based on a standing order to get these nominees forward.
With the passage of this resolution, the Senate would be able to push back the promotions to the year 2024. The Committee on Rules of the Senate would have to approve it first.
Tuberville is against the policy of the Department of Defense that reimburses the travel expenses of service members who take leave to undergo abortions.
His demonstration has the support of a number of other Republicans in the conference.
Tuberville voiced his concern that the resolution would strip him of the restricted power that was accorded to him as a member of the minority in the Upper House.
To get past the expected filibuster and pass the resolution that was proposed by Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-Arizona), there would need to be substantial support from both sides of the aisle and at least 60 votes.
According to one member of the group, any Republican senator who took the Democrats’ side on the issue would face a significant amount of heated political reaction.
