President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States will end roughly $4 billion in annual assistance to Israel at the end of 2026, saying Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed that the country no longer needed the aid.

“We were giving them $4 billion. We are. But it gets cut off at the end of the year,” Trump said during an interview on “Fox & Friends” on midterm election day. He described the assistance as a mix of cash, military support and “barter.”

“They don’t need it,” Trump said. “Israel is a very thriving country.” He added that the United States would still help Israel if necessary and that Israel could continue buying American weapons.

Trump’s statement appears to conflict with the current U.S.-Israel military aid agreement, which provides about $3.8 billion annually through fiscal year 2028. He did not explain whether the agreement would be ended early or how the change would be carried out. Trump also said the aid figure had become a talking point for Democrats.

Netanyahu has previously expressed interest in reducing Israel’s reliance on U.S. aid over time, as the country’s economy and defense industry have grown. His office had not publicly confirmed the agreement Trump described as of Tuesday.
