Stephen A. Smith reportedly said several prominent figures connected to the Democratic Party have failed to accept invitations to appear on his show, declaring that some have responded with nothing but “crickets.”
Smith addressed the issue in a YouTube video posted Tuesday while discussing accusations that he has repeatedly disparaged Black women.
Earlier this month, the National Association of Black Journalists selected Smith for its “Thumbs Down” award, citing what the organization described as a recurring pattern of disparaging remarks aimed at prominent Black women in politics, sports and media.
Smith has repeatedly denied that characterization and said his invitations to critics and Democratic figures have gone unanswered.
The commentator said former CNN host Don Lemon and NABJ President Errin Haines wanted to speak privately despite previously making public statements. He said Rep. Jasmine Crockett and former Vice President Kamala Harris had not publicly responded to his invitations.
Smith noted that he met privately with Harris for two hours more than a year ago, something he claimed nobody mentions.
Former first lady Michelle Obama, Cari Champion and Jemele Hill have also been invited to appear, according to Smith.
“I ain’t got no problems,” he said.
Smith insisted that he does not harbor hatred toward the women he named and said he has “nothing but love for them.”
“I don’t have time to have hate in my heart,” Smith said, while joking there may be one unnamed exception known to his audience.
His remarks came as he continued pushing back against claims that his criticism of prominent Black women reflects a broader pattern of personal hostility.
