Fox Business hosts Larry Kudlow and Dagen McDowell took aim at New York City Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo on Wednesday following reports that he lives in a $1.5 million home purchased by his father.
The hosts discussed Gordillo while talking about affordability, jobs and energy, with McDowell first criticizing Democrats over the Keystone Pipeline.
“I’ll never forget when the Democrats shut down the Keystone Pipeline, and they always dismissed those jobs as being temporary jobs,” McDowell said, noting the pipeline involved union work.
McDowell questioned who Democrats represent if they do not stand behind “work, jobs, and the unions.”
The conversation shifted to data centers, which McDowell said provide permanent jobs for HVAC workers and electricians. Kudlow added that companies operating the facilities deal with issues including water circulation and providing their own power.
McDowell said she would choose a data center “all day long” over a solar farm taking up land where she grew up.
She then pivoted to Gordillo, referencing his reported comments about landlords earning double-digit returns.
“This DSA leader Gordillo in New York, who thinks that double-digit returns should be illegal, or it’s unconstitutional to earn a double-digit return as a landlord,” McDowell said.
Kudlow quickly jumped in.
“Got a nice house, got a beautiful house,” he quipped as his co-hosts laughed.
McDowell noted that Gordillo lives in a $1.5 million home before Kudlow joked that his parents had provided it for him.
“Saved his—saved his downwardly mobile a**, sorry,” Kudlow added.
McDowell said Gordillo’s father is a millionaire immigrant whom she believed came from Peru, started a business and became highly successful. She said he owns a couple of seven-figure homes in Florida and purchased the Bed-Stuy property where Gordillo lives.
McDowell described the property as beautiful and completely renovated, joking about its porch and landscaping.
She then turned to Gordillo’s educational and professional background.
“This guy went to Yale,” McDowell said.
“Of course,” Kudlow responded.
McDowell said Gordillo studied art at Yale and later worked at an art gallery, claiming he was apparently supported by his parents. She said he subsequently changed careers and joined an electricians union while attempting to become an electrician.
McDowell added that it was “murky” whether Gordillo ever completed his apprenticeship and fully became an electrician.
She concluded the segment by explicitly labeling her comments as satire and sarcasm before mocking his career path.
“I’m not very good at selling art, so I’m gonna become a professional socialist,” McDowell joked, pretending to speak as Gordillo.
She continued the bit by saying he needed to appear to be a working man and would therefore “cosplay an electrician.”
Her Fox Business co-hosts chuckled as she wrapped up the criticism.
