Questions surrounding Sen. Mitch McConnell’s health continued to mount this week as Newsmax hosts Carl Higbie and Rob Finnerty sharply criticized Republicans for what they described as a lack of transparency about the longtime Kentucky senator’s condition.

McConnell, 84, has not been seen publicly for weeks after being hospitalized on June 14, when he was reportedly found unconscious at his Washington, D.C., home. Since then, his office has declined to provide detailed information about his medical condition, fueling speculation and increasing calls for clarity from both political allies and critics.

Although McConnell’s staff has remained tight-lipped, several Republicans have insisted the senator has recently been communicating with them. Former McConnell adviser Scott Jennings, along with spokespeople for Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso of Wyoming, have all said they have spoken with McConnell in recent days.

Despite those assurances, Higbie argued that Republicans were making the same mistake they previously accused Democrats of making during former President Joe Biden’s time in office.

In a post on X Thursday morning, Higbie wrote that Republicans were handling McConnell’s health situation the same way Democrats handled concerns surrounding Biden, claiming that no one had actually spoken with the senator and suggesting the effort was intended to prevent Rep. Thomas Massie from pursuing McConnell’s Senate seat.

Higbie’s remarks referenced longstanding allegations from Republicans that Democrats ignored or downplayed concerns about Biden while he served as president.

The controversy intensified after Jennings appeared on CNN with host Kasie Hunt. During the interview, Hunt challenged Jennings to have McConnell call into the program. Jennings responded by laughing off the request rather than producing proof that the senator was available.

Finnerty also devoted significant attention to the issue on his Newsmax program, raising questions about McConnell’s whereabouts and criticizing what he viewed as a lack of public accountability.

During his broadcast, Finnerty pointed to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear’s decision to launch an inquiry into McConnell’s condition. Beshear requested a formal update regarding the senator’s health and well-being as concerns continued to grow over his ability to carry out the duties of his office.

Finnerty argued that the story had moved well beyond political speculation, saying it had become a serious issue deserving public answers.

He also highlighted Kentucky law, noting that if McConnell were to resign or die while in office, the state would be required to hold a special election within 90 days. Such an election would occur before the November elections, creating an opportunity for candidates such as Rep. Thomas Massie to enter the race. Finnerty suggested that outcome was something Republicans hoped to avoid.

The uncertainty has reached the highest levels of government. While speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, President Donald Trump acknowledged he did not know McConnell’s current condition, saying simply, “I have no idea.”

Meanwhile, Beshear formally sent McConnell a letter Wednesday requesting that the senator provide an update on his health directly to Kentucky voters.

The speculation surrounding McConnell intensified further after Trump ally Laura Loomer claimed on X that unnamed “sources” told her the senator was “brain dead” and would not return to the Senate, a statement that sparked widespread controversy as questions over McConnell’s health continue to grow.
