Biden Calls Trump a ‘Loser’ in Attack on Capital Projects, Alleged Corruption

Former President Joe Biden called President Donald Trump “a loser” Saturday during a sharp keynote address that used changes to federal landmarks in Washington to cast the administration as incompetent, self-serving, and corrupt.

Biden delivered the remarks at a Maryland Democratic Party gala in Hanover, where Democrats gathered to build support ahead of the November midterm elections and their effort to retake control of Congress.

In a roughly 10-minute speech, Biden pointed to several high-profile projects associated with Trump’s second term, including the demolition of the White House East Wing to make room for a ballroom, a court-ordered removal of Trump’s name from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, plans for a triumphal arch, and a troubled $14.7 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool that was followed by an algae bloom.

After listing the examples, Biden paused and said, “Whoa!” He then added, “What a loser.”

Biden argued that the controversies were not merely symbolic. He also criticized the administration’s plans to compensate people convicted for their roles in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack who were later pardoned by Trump.

He focused particular attention on the reflecting pool renovation, which has become a weird obsession on the left.

“It reflects something even worse than the narcissism and incompetence at the core of this administration,” Biden continued. “It’s the corruption – the corruption, the brazen, blatant corruption,” he said. “Corruption on a scale never seen before in American history in any administration.”

Biden also attacked Trump’s foreign policy, criticizing his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine and accusing him of the “deliberate distortion and destruction” of the NATO alliance. Biden said the alliance has faced additional strain from the war in Iran that the United States and Israel began in late February.

“He’s diminished our standing in the world more than any president in history has,” Biden said of Trump.

The speech came exactly two years after Biden’s widely criticized debate performance against Trump, which prompted his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Trump later defeated Vice President Kamala Harris to win a second term.

Biden’s appearance also came as members of his family have taken on more visible public roles since he left office. Former first lady Jill Biden released her memoir, View from the East Wing, on June 2 and has been promoting the book while discussing how her husband’s cancer diagnosis, announced in May 2025, has changed her outlook on life.

Hunter Biden has also drawn attention for a series of candid social media posts about politics, mental health, and addiction recovery. The posts followed a pardon issued by his father for federal gun and tax convictions.
