Country music star Martina McBride announced Thursday that she will no longer participate in a major event scheduled for next month on the National Mall celebrating America’s 250th birthday, saying she believes she was misled about the nature of the gathering.

McBride shared her decision in a statement posted to Instagram, explaining that she originally agreed to perform because she was told the event would be nonpartisan and focused on celebrating all 50 states.

“I was presented with an opportunity to perform at a nonpartisan event but that turned out to be misleading,” McBride wrote. “I asked lots of questions and was assured this was a nonpartisan event that was meant to celebrate ALL 50 states.”

The singer had been slated to appear as part of the “Great American State Fair,” a large-scale celebration announced this week by Freedom 250 organizers. The event is scheduled to run for 16 days, from June 25 through July 10, and is intended to coincide with the nation’s 250th birthday festivities.

McBride was among a small group of artists expected to perform during the event, which organizers described as a celebration of the states and the country’s historic milestone.

In her statement, however, McBride said the event she initially agreed to participate in no longer resembled the one that had been described to her.

The country singer explained that she originally viewed the gathering as an expanded version of the state fairs where she has performed throughout her career. Those events, she suggested, are generally community-focused celebrations that bring together people from a wide range of backgrounds.

According to McBride, her perception of the event changed over time.

“I thought that this was a bigger version of the many state fairs I’ve played over the years,” she wrote. “But things started changing.”

While McBride did not elaborate on the specific developments that caused her concern, she made clear that she no longer felt comfortable participating and ultimately decided to withdraw from the lineup.

Her statement focused heavily on her relationship with fans and the themes she believes have defined her music throughout her career.

McBride has long been known for songs that address personal struggles and everyday challenges, and she said those experiences shaped her decision to step away from the event.

“I’ve spent my entire career singing songs about real people with real issues,” she wrote.

The singer added that she has always viewed her platform as an opportunity to speak for people who feel overlooked or unheard.

“I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be a voice for those who have felt like they didn’t have one,” McBride said.

She also expressed concern that some listeners might interpret her involvement in the event as conflicting with the messages they have connected with through her music over the years.

“It greatly upsets me that any fan who has been moved by my music may now feel like I’m abandoning the meaning behind those songs,” she wrote.

McBride’s withdrawal comes as preparations continue for the upcoming America 250 celebrations, which are expected to draw attention from across the country. Her decision highlights the challenges public figures often face when participating in large national events that can become subjects of political debate, even when they are initially presented as broad civic celebrations.

For McBride, the issue was not the opportunity to perform itself, but her belief that the event evolved into something different from what she says she was originally promised. As a result, she chose to step aside rather than risk sending a message she did not intend to convey
