What should have been a day of achievement and celebration for graduating seniors at John Marshall High School instead descended into chaos when a spectator allegedly rushed the stage and attacked a student during the school’s commencement ceremony in Virginia.

Authorities say 20-year-old Evan J. Williams Jr. was arrested Thursday following the incident and charged with disorderly conduct and damage to private property. The charges stem from a fight that erupted Wednesday during the graduation ceremony held at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center.

The shocking disturbance unfolded just before 11 a.m. as students were walking across the stage to receive their diplomas. A viral video circulating on social media captured the brief but dramatic scene, showing multiple individuals becoming involved in a confrontation in front of students, faculty members, and family members gathered to celebrate the graduates’ accomplishments.

The footage shows several attendees fighting near the stage while university police officers rushed forward in an effort to restore order. As authorities intervened, some audience members appeared to join the altercation while others attempted to help break it up.

The disorder did not end inside the venue. According to officials, several additional altercations broke out outside the Siegel Center as law enforcement worked to contain the situation and safely clear attendees from the area.

Despite the intensity of the confrontation, authorities reported that no injuries occurred and that no weapons were involved.

The response from law enforcement was substantial. Virginia Commonwealth University Police Maj. Nicole Dailey said that more than 50 officers from both the university police department and the Richmond Police Department responded to the incident. Their efforts ultimately allowed officials to regain control of the venue and continue the graduation ceremony.

Dailey also confirmed that three additional individuals were detained during the unrest.

Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards said officers were deployed to parking facilities surrounding the venue to help ensure families and graduates could leave safely following the disturbances.

“We don’t want to see the retaliation continue,” Edwards said.

Investigators are continuing to review security footage from both inside and outside the arena as they work to determine exactly what led to the confrontation. Authorities have indicated that Williams and potentially others involved could face additional charges as the investigation proceeds.

Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras strongly criticized those responsible for disrupting the ceremony, arguing that personal disputes have no place at events intended to honor students’ achievements.

“Whatever acrimony, whatever concerns you may have with anybody in the community, leave that at home, or don’t come to graduation,” Kamras said during a press conference.

Kamras also praised the swift response from law enforcement and said additional security measures have been implemented for upcoming graduation ceremonies at Richmond High School for the Arts and Richmond Success Academy.

The superintendent urged members of the community not to allow the incident to overshadow the accomplishments of the graduating class. John Marshall High School achieved a 100 percent graduation rate this year, a milestone that officials said deserved to remain the focus of the occasion.

While the ceremony was ultimately able to continue, the disruption served as a reminder of how quickly public celebrations can be derailed by personal conflicts. For many families gathered to recognize years of hard work and perseverance, the hope now is that the graduates’ achievement—not the disorder that interrupted it—will be what is remembered
