Former vice president and failed presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is now reportedly drawing renewed scrutiny after reports revealed that she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, recently purchased a multimillion-dollar home in a high-end coastal enclave of California, a move critics say clashes with years of dire warnings she has issued about climate change and rising sea levels.

According to multiple reports, Harris and Emhoff bought an $8.15 million residence in Point Dume, an exclusive oceanside neighborhood in Malibu. The purchase has raised eyebrows given Harris’ long history as a senator and vice president of warning Americans about the dangers of coastline erosion, flooding, and climate-related disasters.

The roughly 4,000-square-foot home includes four bedrooms and six bathrooms and sits on approximately three-quarters of an acre, according to details reported by the New York Post. One real estate listing describes the property as being “perched in a prime coastal location” with “breathtaking ocean views.” The home is located near Point Dume State Beach, an area that has been identified as facing a high risk of flooding and erosion.

Climate projections previously embraced by the Biden-Harris administration suggested that Point Dume State Beach could suffer serious damage from rising sea levels. That particular climate model was discontinued in June 2025 under the Trump administration, as noted by the Free Beacon. Separately, a 2023 Interior Department study concluded that as much as 75 percent of California’s beaches could be eroded by the year 2100.

The Point Dume region has also faced real-world environmental threats in recent years. The area suffered significant damage during the 2018 Woolsey Fire and experienced additional damage during the 2025 Palisades Fire, underscoring its vulnerability to natural disasters.

Harris has spent years publicly sounding the alarm on climate change. In a 2019 social media post, she declared that glaciers were melting, sea levels were rising, and climate change was real, adding that action was needed before it was too late. That same year, she sponsored the Living Shorelines Act, legislation that called for $50 million per year in federal funding to address the impacts of rising sea levels.

While serving as vice president, Harris was appointed as the administration’s lead spokeswoman for the Climate-Ready Coasts initiative, a multibillion-dollar federal program. In April 2023, she announced $562 million in grants aimed at helping communities she described as being “on the front lines of the climate crisis.” During a speech at the University of Miami, Harris said the climate crisis posed a profound threat to the nation and the world, while insisting there was still time to make a difference.

The Malibu home reportedly purchased by Harris and Emhoff also includes features that the Biden-Harris administration previously targeted as problematic, including a gas stove, a fireplace, and a tankless water heater. As vice president, Harris supported energy efficiency regulations that would have restricted certain gas stoves and some tankless water heater models.

Point Dume is among Malibu’s most exclusive neighborhoods, known for its privacy and gated access to Little Dume Beach. The area has long attracted wealthy and high-profile residents, including celebrities such as Sean Penn, Gerard Butler, and Julia Roberts, according to the New York Post.
