During a recent address to Congress, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would be “reclaiming” the Panama Canal, emphasizing America’s intention to regain control over the vital shipping route.
Trump celebrated a significant development in this effort: financial asset manager BlackRock’s agreement to acquire two major ports associated with the canal from a Hong Kong-based company for $23 billion.
He noted that this move symbolizes a broader ambition to restore American influence in the region.
Trump remarked on the historical significance of the Panama Canal, stating that it was built by Americans “for Americans,” and highlighted the sacrifices made during its construction, where thousands of workers lost their lives due to harsh conditions.
“My administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal, and we’ve already started doing it. Just today, a large American company announced they are buying both ports around the Panama Canal.” Trump said.

He also criticized the Carter administration for ceding control of the canal in 1977, claiming that the agreement had been severely violated since then.
In his speech, Trump also pointed out the recent cooperation between the U.S. and Panama, including an agreement for free passage of U.S. Navy vessels through the canal.
This development follows discussions between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino, which also led to Panama’s decision to withdraw from China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Trump’s declaration reflects his administration’s focus on reasserting U.S. dominance in global trade routes and countering foreign influence, particularly from China.
By leveraging significant investments in the region, Trump aims to reinforce America’s strategic interests while reclaiming a historical asset that he believes should remain under U.S. control.
