During a recent address to Congress, President Donald Trump announced the renaming of a wildlife refuge in honor of Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl from Texas who was tragically murdered last year.
The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge near Houston will now be known as the “Jocelyn Nungaray National Refuge,” a move intended to commemorate her life and the pain her family endured.
Trump recounted the harrowing details of Jocelyn’s abduction, stating that she was kidnapped while walking to a convenience store, then assaulted and killed by two individuals described as illegal aliens from Venezuela.
He emphasized that these suspects had been released into the United States by the previous administration, attributing Jocelyn’s death to what he termed a failure of border security.
Holding up the executive order from the podium, Trump expressed his commitment to honoring Jocelyn and her family, saying he promised her mother, Alexis Nungaray, that they would never forget her daughter.
During this moment, Alexis, who attended as a special guest of First Lady Melania Trump, silently mouthed her gratitude to the president.
According to the White House, the suspects in Jocelyn’s case are alleged members of a criminal gang and have been indicted on serious charges, including capital murder and aggravated sexual assault.
Despite being apprehended for illegally crossing the border earlier in 2024, they were released into the U.S. prior to the tragic incident.
This renaming serves as a symbolic gesture in memory of Jocelyn and aims to draw attention to the broader issues surrounding immigration and border security, resonating deeply with many who followed the case.
