On Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” comedian Bill Maher defended Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis from a variety of attacks from other liberals over his state’s so-called ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law.
Maher was discussing if DeSantis may run against former President Donald Trump in 2024 with Democratic California Rep. Ro Khanna and CBS News journalist Robert Costa.
Khanna disagreed with Maher, claiming that DeSantis’ attack on Disney was somehow a danger to the First Amendment.
“I understand what you’re saying about DeSantis. The reason why I think DeSantis is so strong is because he can do both things. He can do the performance art that seems to have you so exercised, to the base, most of which I don’t really know it it’s that damaging.” Maher said.
“He picks a fight with Disney, does it really affect anybody? I mean, I read that ‘Don’t Say Gay,’ which is not the name of the law. They called it the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law. It could have been called the ‘Let’s do things in schools the way we did five years ago’ law. It really could’ve.” He continued.
In March, DeSantis signed new parental rights legislation into law and has since gone on to soundly defeat Democratic candidate Charlie Crist during his recent reelection campaign.
Despite the fact that the term “gay” is not in the law, opponents nicknamed it the “Don’t Say Gay” measure in an apparent attempt to make the bill sound bigoted.
Classroom talks of gender identity and sexual orientation are prohibited in kindergarten through third grade, and comparable conversations in subsequent years must be “age appropriate.”
DeSantis has quickly risen to the top of many political observer’s short lists of GOP Presidential candidates in 2024, after his incredible reelection performance in Florida, where he easily trounced his Democratic opponent on a night which saw may Republicans backed by former President Trump struggle.
