Within the context of President Donald Trump’s plans to modernize the war against transnational drug cartels, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is now reportedly conducting operations over Mexico using MQ-9 Reaper drones.

As reported by CNN, this action comes at a time when the government has already committed a substantial amount of resources to the southern border in an effort to prevent illegal immigrants and drugs from entering the United States at the unparalleled rate that was seen during the administration of Vice President Joe Biden.

For the time being, the unarmed drones are only being used to carry out surveillance flights against the cartels.

It is possible for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to equip the drones and deploy them against foreign adversaries, as it has frequently done when combating Islamic militants in East Africa and the Middle East.

The administration is categorizing the cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO), a classification that it has not yet formally made but is anticipated to do in the coming weeks.

This designation could lay the framework for the use of drones to murder top cartel leaders and destroy manufacturing locations when it arrives.

The CIA drones that are flying over Mexico have been minimized by Mexican officials because they are unable to compete with the significantly larger and more powerful government of the United States.

In an effort to combat drug cartels, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum did not oppose the idea of using drones to fly over Mexican airspace when they were proposed.

Trade wars, foreign policy that undermines communist China, and the elimination of drug cartels are among the most important objectives that Trump has set for the organization.
