During a new interview with the Washington Examiner on Thursday, the Republican operative in charge of the political arm of a caucus of approximately 90 House Republicans is now claiming that Trump single-handedly squandered the party’s excellent potential to make significant gains in Congress by promoting terrible candidates in important races across the country.
Sarah Chamberlain, head of the Republican Main Street Partnership Political Action Committee, believes Trump’s position in party politics must be reconsidered, with or without the former president’s help.
“It’s time to have a come-to-Jesus meeting with him. That was not a good Tuesday night. He and his colleagues, staff — they must recognize that. They need to reassess.” Chamberlin said.
“We need to have different candidates. They can’t be candidates that just love Donald Trump. If you really want to be the president again and be the leader of the party — Mitch McConnell was right, candidates matter.” She continued.
Chamberlain’s remarks come as Trump prepares to formally declare a presidential run in 2024, adding to the chorus of senior Republicans criticizing Trump for the party’s failures in midterm elections that were expected to be a major red wave.
However, the Republican Main Street Partnership places a higher importance on governance and backing electable candidates.
Despite President Joe Biden’s unpopularity and voter concern over inflation, crime, and border security, Republicans are on course to regain the bare majority of House seats.
Democrats were poised to maintain their Senate majority and even win a seat.
Chamberlain cited four House contests in which Republican Main Street Partnership PAC-backed candidates lost to nominees who went on to lose in the general election.
In three of these races Republican backed nominees progressed, beating potentially more electable candidates before they themselves went on to lose in the general election.
