Former football legend and 2022 U.S. Senate contender Herschel Walker has now been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as ambassador to the Bahamas.

On Tuesday evening, Trump made the announcement through his platform on Truth Social.

“I am pleased to nominate Herschel Walker as United States Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad.” Trump wrote.

“A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Great, Herschel has been a tireless advocate for youth sports. During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team.” he added.

“Congratulations Herschel! You will make Georgia, and our entire Nation, proud, because we know you will always put AMERICA FIRST!” Trump concluded.

Walker was born in Wrightsville, Georgia, on March 3, 1962. He achieved fame as a collegiate football player at the University of Georgia, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1982.

He had an impressive career in the NFL, playing for teams such as the Dallas Cowboys, Minnesota Vikings, and Philadelphia Eagles, and was recognized for his speed, strength, and determination.

Walker also participated in other sports, such as Olympic bobsledding and mixed martial arts.

Walker has pursued endeavors in business and public service, including advocating for mental health awareness, drawing from his personal experiences with dissociative identity disorder, in addition to athletics. His political career began in 2022 when he was nominated by the Republican Party for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia.

Issues such as national security, economic development, and conservative values were prioritized during his campaign.

In part due to receiving Trump’s backing, Walker was able to secure the Republican nominee for the Senate in Georgia in 2022.

However, he ultimately lost the election to the incumbent Democratic senator Raphael Warnock.
