The chair of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is now reportedly lending his support to the campaign of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, to become the ranking member on the committee.
Comer has predicted that he will have “a good working relationship” with the progressive politician if she is successful in her bid for the position.
“I’m a big AOC fan. Obviously, I don’t agree with very much of her policy, but I think she’s a good person, I think she’s very well spoken.” Comer said during a recent appearance on CNN.
He then proceeded to draw parallels between the cooperation he is now tying up and a possible partnership between Ocasio-Cortez.
“I did not have good relationship with Jaime Raskin, I don’t think that’s any secret,” he added.
“I tell the press when they ask about the race for ranking member, the Democrats have nowhere to go but up after having Jamie Raskin for the last four years, so, I think AOC would be great, Gerry Connolly would be great. … But I certainly look forward to working with the next ranking member.” he continued.
Last week, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez began her campaign to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.
She is seeking to succeed Raskin, who is resigning from her position in order to run for the top position on the House Judiciary Committee.
In order to secure one of the most influential seats that will be essential in the fight against President-elect Trump during his second term in the White House, Ocasio-Cortez is attempting to defeat Rep. Gerry Connolly (Democrat of Virginia), who has served in the House of Representatives for seven terms.
