Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), a progressive Democrat hailing from New York, has now reportedly initiated a candidacy to serve as the top Democratic representative on the House committee that is in charge of directing investigations into the federal government.
AOC made the announcement that she is running for the position of ranking member of the Committee on Oversight and Accountability for the 119th Congress in a letter that she sent to her fellow members on Friday.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, is the current holder of this position.
The member of the “Squad” mentioned in her presentation to her colleagues that her primary objective would be to steer a Democratic movement that would be directed against the administration that will be in power under President-elect Trump.
“This is not a position I seek lightly. The responsibility of leading Democrats on the House Oversight Committee during Donald Trump’s second term in the White House is a profound and consequential one. Now, more than ever, we must focus on the Committee’s strong history of both holding administrations accountable and taking on the economic precarity and inequality that is challenging the American way of life.” Cortez wrote in the letter.
The declaration made by AOC comes only a few days after Raskin, who is currently the ranking member of the committee, made the announcement that he would be interested in running for the top Democratic role once more during the next Congress.
AOC will also be running for the seat against Representative Gerry Connolly, a Democrat from Virginia, who just announced his intention to run for the position of Oversight.
Representative James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, is presently serving as the chairman of the committee, which is tasked with ensuring that the federal government and its agencies are conducting themselves in an efficient and accountable manner.
