After pursuing legal action to secure a spot on the North Carolina ballot as a third-party candidate in July, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is now reportedly pursuing legal action to now remove his name from the same ballot.
He is reversing course due to concerns that his inclusion on the battleground state ballot could potentially harm his new ally, former President Donald Trump.
Kennedy Jr. filed a lawsuit in Wake County Superior Court last Friday, alleging that the North Carolina Election Board has caused him “irreparable harm” by failing to remove his name.
The board had determined that it was too late, as the battleground state had already printed 1.7 million ballots.
Kennedy Jr.’s lawsuit is a component of his overarching strategy to withdraw from critical swing states, where polling indicates that his candidacy could increase the support of Vice President Kamala Harris in the forthcoming election.
On August 23, the former independent presidential candidate and ex-Democrat withdrew from the campaign, subsequently supporting Trump and securing a position on the Republican transition team.
Kennedy Jr. established the We The People party in July, overcoming legal challenges from the North Carolina Democratic Party to secure his position on the ballot.
Kennedy Jr. has been granted removal in states such as Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Nevada; however, his similar requests in Michigan and Wisconsin were rejected for reasons that remain still somewhat unclear.
