President-elect Donald Trump torched President Joe Biden on Christmas Eve for commuted the sentences of 37 of the 40 inmates presently on the federal government’s death row.

Jorge Avila-Torrez, who was convicted of sexually assaulting, torturing, and murdering eight-year-old Laura Hobbs and nine-year-old Krystal Tobias, as well as strangling 20-year-old naval officer Amanda Snell, is among those who have had their sentences commuted.

“Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss. But guided by my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level. In good conscience, I cannot stand back and let a new administration resume executions that I halted.” Biden said in a statement.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Biden for his decision to grant mercy to Avila-Torrez and others who have committed comparable offenses.

“Joe Biden just commuted the Death Sentence on 37 of the worst killers in our Country. When you hear the acts of each, you won’t believe that he did this. Makes no sense. Relatives and friends are further devastated. They can’t believe this is happening!” Trump wrote.

Biden’s controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, who had been convicted on tax and gun charges, was followed by the widespread commutation of those on death row.

He had previously pledged not to grant forgiveness to the younger Biden.
