In 2023, Thomas Gibbons-Neff, a journalist for the New York Times, reportedly conducted an interview with Ryan Wesley Routh, the primary suspect in the latest assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump that occurred on Sunday at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The FBI is currently conducting an investigation into the 58-year-old former construction worker from North Carolina.
This occurred after a Secret Service agent observed the muzzle of his rifle near the next hole on the golf course that Trump would be playing, and was able to avert the alleged planned assassination.

Gibbons-Neff disclosed in a Sunday article that he had previously interviewed Routh in March 2023 for a story that centered on foreign fighters who were volunteering in Ukraine.
Routh, who lacked military experience and was unqualified to fight, had expressed his aspiration to assist Ukraine in its battle against Russia by recruiting Afghan soldiers who had fled the Taliban.
Routh acknowledged that he was “just a civilian” with no practical means to implement his grand schemes, despite his grand ambitions.
Although he lacked any tangible strategies for accomplishing his objectives, he devised schemes that involved falsifying passports and bribing officials to transport Afghan veterans to the front lines.
