Despite his efforts to have his name removed from ballots in “10 battleground states,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a Democrat who transitioned to an independent and suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed Donald Trump last week, will reportedly still be on the ballot in Virginia.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that the Virginia Department of Elections on Thursday approved Kennedy’s placement on the November 2024 general election ballot, while informing independent candidate Cornel West that he did not qualify.
According to Virginia’s election officials, West, a socialist and racial activist, failed to submit the required documentation.
In 2020, Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen garnered over 64,000 votes in Virginia, while all other third-party candidates received a combined 19,765 ballots.
Kennedy, Trump, Vice President Kamala Harris, Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and Libertarian Party candidate Chase Oliver are the candidates who have qualified for the 2024 ballot placement in Virginia.
Election officials are still required to examine the forms of three additional third-party candidates who may still be included on the ballot.
In 2016, Stein was accused by Democrats of stealing ballots from Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, which ultimately aided Trump in winning the election.
Kennedy declared last week that he would endeavor to exclude himself from the ballot in states where he could potentially serve as a “spoiler” after suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump.
