Having remained silent for months, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has now announced that he is supporting former President Trump for reelection in 2024.

McCarthy stated that he believes Trump will be the GOP nominee in 2024 and that he will back him in an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning” that will air on Sunday.

He went on to say that he anticipates Republicans gaining control of the Senate and the House next year, and that Trump will win reelection if Joe Biden is the Democratic nominee.

In addition, when Robert Costa, chief election and campaign correspondent for CBS News, asked McCarthy during the interview if he would be open to joining Trump’s cabinet, McCarthy said he would.

McCarthy became the first House Speaker to be removed in the history of the chamber in October, holding the speaker’s gavel for about nine months.

Following his dismissal, there was conjecture over McCarthy’s intentions: would he seek reelection to the position he has had since 2007 or step down?

McCarthy has consistently shown great support for the former president, in spite of his many scandals.

In the weeks that followed the attack, however, McCarthy deepened his relationship with Trump, paying him a visit at Mar-a-Lago and later claiming that Trump had not “provoked” the attack.

In addition, he backed the removal of former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney from the House GOP leadership due to her disapproval of Trump’s assertions.
