A Democrat from Michigan reportedly posted a job opening online and highly encouraged anybody and everyone other than White men to apply for the position, a seemingly racist and discriminatory practice.

Recently, the office of Democratic Representative Hillary Scholten of Michigan posted a job ad for the position of senior communications director in her office.

This position would play an important part in the day-to-day operations of the representative’s office.

The job posting on Scholten’s website, which offers a salary ranging from $85,000 to $120,000, goes on to strongly urge persons with a variety of personal attributes to apply for the position, with the exception of heterosexual White men

“We strongly encourage women (and all individuals who do not identify as male), people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, veterans, and members of other underrepresented communities to apply,” the notice reads.

“Our office deeply values staff diversity (both because we recognize we are a better office for it and because we know that it is objectively the right thing to do!). As such we strongly encourage women (and all individuals who do not identify as male), people of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, and members of other underrepresented communities to apply.” the notice added.

Typically competition for employment in Congressional offices is fierce, and in the end, the decision to hire someone frequently comes down to the discretion of individual members of the House.

Since 1975, anti-discrimination ethical regulations have been in place governing the hiring and dismissal of employees in the House of Representatives.

It remains unclear whether or not Scholten will face consequences for the apparently discriminatory job posting.
