Former President Trump has reportedly called for the journalists who published a leaked draft opinion indicating that the Supreme Court was prepared to overturn Roe v. Wade to be imprisoned.
Politico writers Josh Gerstein and Alexander Ward broke the story last spring about a draft decision written by Justice Samuel Alito that might reverse the landmark abortion rule.
The court released a report describing an inquiry into the leak of the opinion on Thursday, stating that it was unable to identify the source of the leak to Politico.
“The Supreme Court has just announced it is not able to find out, even with the help of our “crack” FBI, who the leaker was on the R v Wade scandal. They’ll never find out, & it’s important that they do. So, go to the reporter & ask him/her who it was. If not given the answer, put whoever in jail until the answer is given. You might add the publisher and editor to the list. Stop playing games, this leaking cannot be allowed to happen. It won’t take long before the name of this slime is revealed!” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
With its judgment in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization last June, the Supreme Court opted to overturn Roe.
In the days after Politico’s publication, congressional Republicans and conservative media leaders expressed indignation that the opinion had been leaked before the court issued its formal judgment, and asked that the person responsible for the leak be identified and punished.
