House Democrats voted on Tuesday to protect Hunter Biden, the son of the sitting President Joe Biden, from a probe seeking to uncover influence peddling operations.

The House Oversight Committee voted along party lines to defeat Rep. James Comer’s (R-KY) resolution of inquiry. The resolution was announced after a constant trickle of text messages and emails from the infamous Hunter Biden laptop that appear to implicate the President’s son and raise concerns about what exactly Biden knew about his son’s alleged criminal misconduct. The Kentucky congressman has cautioned that disclosures from the laptop implicate the whole Biden family as a potential threat to U.S. national security.

The decision in the House came after 33 Republican senators requested that Attorney General Merrick Garland appoint a special counsel in the case to investigate Biden’s apparent crimes. While Democrats have managed to keep the Bidens safe and protected for the time being, Republicans may be set to take control of the House and possibly even the Senate in November, in which case Republicans would be free to open their own Congressional probe into the matter.

Hunter Biden joined his father on international visits from 2008 through 2016, during which time the older Biden engaged in extremely lucrative partnerships with energy corporations and investors in both China and Ukraine. President Biden claimed during an appearance on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” Sunday that his son’s dealings had no impact on national security.

President Biden has previously claimed that he and his son never discussed any of Hunter’s foreign business dealings, a claim that has been refuted by photos and messages on his son’s laptop, White House visitor logs, and the claims of Tony Bobulinski, a former Hunter Biden associate who identified the president as “the Big Guy” referred to in Hunter Biden’s emails as an individual receiving a cut from Hunter’s foreign business deals.

Whistleblowers have also come forward to inform Republican legislators that the FBI’s senior brass have shut down any investigations into the laptop, which it got in late 2019, in order to avoid interfering with the 2020 election.
