In a sharply worded social media post early Thursday morning, former President Donald Trump warned that the United States would impose significant tariffs on both the European Union and Canada if they were to form a trade alliance that harms U.S. economic interests.
“If the European Union works with Canada in order to do economic harm to the USA, large scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned, will be placed on them both,” Trump wrote, framing the measure as a protective action for what he described as “the best friend that each of those two countries has ever had.”
Trump’s remarks add fresh tension to an already complex global trade landscape, noted The New York Times. European leaders continue to grapple with U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles—measures introduced during Trump’s time in office that have yet to be fully resolved. With the United States as its largest trading partner, the EU has been working to preserve economic stability and avoid further trade disruptions. However, American officials aligned with Trump have shown limited willingness to compromise.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic responded indirectly in recent days, emphasizing the need for mutual cooperation. “In the end, as it is said, one hand cannot clap,” he remarked, highlighting Europe’s hope for diplomatic dialogue rather than confrontation.
Meanwhile, European nations are actively seeking to expand and diversify their trade relationships. Canada has emerged as a key partner, especially as it strengthens its collaboration with Europe’s defense sector—an alliance that has grown amid questions about the U.S.’s ongoing commitment to NATO. Some on the continent have even pushed the idea of kicking the United States out of NATO.
The president has also hinted at imposing reciprocal tariffs, scheduled to take effect on April 2—dubbed “Liberation Day” by the president—which would target U.S. trading partners with the same tariffs they impose on America.
European Commission officials haven’t yet issued a response to Trump’s comments.
