President Donald Trump used a Friday appearance on Fox & Friends to take direct aim at Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic contender in New York City’s mayoral race, mocking him as “my little communist.” Trump cast Mamdani’s unexpected rise in the polls as evidence of voter discontent with the Democratic field.
When co-host Ainsley Earhardt pressed him about the surge, Trump laughed and replied, “It’s amazing. I call him ‘my little communist’ – he’s my little communist mayor! But, you know, he has to come to Washington for money, a lot of money, and it is amazing, I was so surprised by this,” noted Mediate.

The former president widened his attack to the broader slate of contenders, suggesting their weakness explains Mamdani’s strength. “Even the other two candidates, you look at the candidates, maybe one-on-one somebody could beat him and I’m not looking at the polls too carefully, but it would look like he is going to win and that is a rebellion. It is a rebellion against bad candidates, OK? They’re tired of it,” he said.
Trump then blasted Democratic leadership in New York, pointing to taxes and mismanagement. “They are seeing things happening, we have taxes being put on us in New York by Democrats that are so bad that even Democrats are revolting, it is not possible for a Democrat to lose. The presidential election, I did great in New York, I did great considering – I did great. There are a lot of questions on booths and votes.”
He finished with a final jab at Mamdani: “But we should never be in a position where we’re talking about a communist.”
Mamdani, a Queens-based democratic socialist whose insurgent primary win rattled party insiders, has built momentum on an unapologetically leftwing agenda that includes government-run grocery stores and buying up apartment buildings with government funds to turn them into communes.
