Southern California residents got a jolting wake-up call over the weekend as a swarm of more than 70 earthquakes shook the region, with the bulk of the activity concentrated directly beneath South Los Angeles.
The shaking kicked off early Saturday when a 2.7-magnitude quake struck the Westmont area around 2:30 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Roughly 14 hours later, the same neighborhood was hit again by a 2.6-magnitude tremor just after 4:30 p.m. In between, offshore quakes struck southeast of Catalina Island within minutes of one another, just before 4:15 a.m.
While most of the more than 70 recorded quakes registered as minor “microquakes” below magnitude 2.0, the sheer volume of activity has seismologists on high alert. A weather blogger tracking the cluster on social media said the swarm was crossing directly over the Newport-Inglewood Fault, calling it a situation worth watching closely.
The Southern California swarm wasn’t an isolated event. It came the same weekend a 3.4-magnitude quake shook the Bay Area overnight, and just about a week after a 3.1-magnitude tremor rattled South Los Angeles.
The timing has reignited fears about California’s infamous San Andreas Fault. A recent study has renewed warnings from experts that the long-feared “Big One” — the catastrophic mega-quake Californians have braced for, for generations — may not be as far off as once believed.
Caltech seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones has cautioned that such a quake would not simply be a brief, rolling shake. Her models point to sweeping and catastrophic consequences across the entire state, underscoring why officials continue to press Californians on earthquake preparedness.
Meanwhile, scientists at the University of California, Riverside say they’ve developed a new method for pinpointing where some of the planet’s most destructive earthquakes are likely to strike. The technique works by tracking the buildup of tectonic stress along major fault lines, allowing researchers to zero in on the highest-risk zones for a major rupture.
The team’s research is focused specifically on subduction zones — the geological hot spots where one tectonic plate is forced beneath another. These convergence zones are responsible for generating the largest earthquakes on Earth, including catastrophic ruptures measuring magnitude 8.5 or greater.
For now, Southern California appears to have escaped serious damage from the latest swarm, but the combination of the weekend’s shaking, the Bay Area tremor, and mounting scientific warnings has residents and experts alike bracing for what could come next. As the region continues to sit atop one of the most active fault systems in the country, officials continue to urge families to have an earthquake plan in place, stock emergency supplies, and stay alert as California’s ground continues to rumble.
