Anthony Bernal, a senior adviser to First Lady Jill Biden, has now reportedly refused to comply with a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating President Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities and the potential misuse of the autopen.
This refusal comes amid heightened scrutiny surrounding the administration’s transparency regarding the president’s mental fitness.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer announced on Wednesday that Bernal would not appear for a scheduled interview, which had been set for June 26.
Comer’s remarks signal a growing frustration within the committee, particularly after the White House waived executive privilege for several former Biden aides, including Bernal.
“Now that the White House has waived executive privilege, it’s abundantly clear that Anthony Bernal—Jill Biden’s so-called ‘work husband’—never intended to be transparent regarding Joe Biden’s cognitive decline,” Comer stated.
He accused Bernal of avoiding accountability and suggested that his refusal to testify was an attempt to conceal information pertinent to the investigation.
The committee has been probing allegations regarding the president’s mental acuity, particularly in light of testimony from former White House staff secretary Neera Tanden, who had indicated limited interaction with President Biden, despite having significant authority in the administration.
