A fiery debate over Iran erupted Thursday night on CNN as conservative commentator Scott Jennings and former Trump administration official Caroline Sunshine sparred over the history of U.S. conflict with the Iranian regime and whether Congress should place additional limits on President Donald Trump’s military authority.

The exchange took place during CNN NewsNight with host Abby Phillip, where panelists discussed proposals to impose additional “guardrails” on the president’s ability to launch military action against Iran.

Jennings argued against new congressional restrictions, saying the United States has faced decades of hostility from Iran and warning against taking a softer approach toward the regime.

“We can’t be all rainbows and unicorns with the Iranians,” Jennings said, adding that “they’ve been at war with us for 47 years.”

He repeated the point for emphasis.

“47 years! 47 years!”

Sunshine, who previously served in the Trump administration, challenged Jennings’ characterization, saying she had never heard the relationship described as a 47-year war.

“47 Years? Why did I learn about… I’m sorry, the first time I’ve heard about the 47-year Iran war was like this year,” Sunshine said.

Jennings responded with a laugh before taking aim at Sunshine’s remark.

“I’m sorry you don’t read much,” he said. “Did you just start following the news this year?”

Sunshine replied that schools do not teach about “the 47-year war with Iran” and argued that describing it in those terms diminishes recognized military conflicts.

“We don’t teach about the 47-year war with Iran in school,” she said. “Like, it’s insulting to actual conflicts that we’ve been involved in.”

Jennings quickly pushed back.

“It’s insulting? It’s insulting to your intelligence that you have no idea what the Iranians have done,” he responded.

As the discussion grew more heated, Sunshine questioned Jennings about the scope of Iran’s actions against Americans.

“How many Americans have they killed on U.S. soil in the 47 years we’ve been in the war?” she asked.

Jennings replied that Iran had “killed thousands of Americans” and “maimed American soldiers.”

Sunshine responded, “Yeah, which is all wrong. Why have our soldiers been over there?”

Jennings continued by arguing that Iran has attacked American allies and maintained that the regime has been in conflict with the West since coming to power. He also said Iran’s intention is to develop a nuclear weapon and use it against the United States, Israel, and the West.

Sunshine countered that Iran has learned it can act “like a nuclear power without ever needing to be one” by using the Strait of Hormuz.

She then questioned the long-term costs of continued military engagement, asking how many American troops and how much money should be committed to achieving U.S. objectives.

“But OK, so like if we’re going to keep going, and what’s your number?” Sunshine asked. “Like, how many U.S. troops are you willing to expend to achieve your objectives and what amount of money?”

Jennings responded that protecting the American people from what he called “the worst regime in the world” justified significant spending.

“What amount of money am I willing to spend to keep the American people safe from the worst regime in the world? A fair amount,” he said.

Sunshine then argued that Iran does not possess a nuclear weapon and said, “They don’t want a nuclear weapon.”

“They don’t?” Jennings replied before rejecting her claim.

He argued that Iran does seek a nuclear weapon and said Sunshine was treating the regime as though it were a rational actor.

“A, they do want a nuclear weapon, and B, you’re acting like they’re some sort of a rational actor here,” Jennings said. “They’re irrational people. It’s pretty apparent.”
