Rep. Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has reportedly proposed an amendment to the Constitution that, if it were to be adopted, would make it possible for President Donald Trump to seek for a third term.
The bill is written in such a way that it excludes former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton from being able to return to the Oval Office.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.” the 22nd amendment to the constitution reads.
It wasn’t until 1951 that the amendment was finally ratified, which was six years after Franklin D. Roosevelt passed away while serving his unusual fourth mandate.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” the bill reads.
Given that Obama, Bush, and Clinton each served two consecutive terms in office, it is still possible that they would be banned from running for president.
However, given that Trump is currently serving a second term that is not consecutive, he would be permitted to serve once more.
Considering that in order for Ogles’ amendment to be approved, it must have support from two-thirds of both chambers of Congress and three-fourths of the states, this is something that is completely irrelevant.
It is only the second time in history that a president has served a second term that is not consecutive. Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States, was defeated by Benjamin Harrison in the rematch that took place in 1892.
In 1888, Cleveland was unsuccessful in his attempt for reelection.
