Longtime radio and podcast host Adam Carolla went scorched earth this week on Texas Senate candidate James Talarico, accusing the Democrat of race-based pandering over his comments on a high-profile murder trial.
Carolla tore into Talarico on his podcast, pointing to the Democrat’s August appearance on a popular urban radio and media program as exhibit A. During that appearance, Talarico argued that the trial of Karmelo Anthony, a Black teenager convicted this year of murdering a white high school student at a track meet, exposed flaws in the justice system because there were no Black jurors on the panel.
Carolla dismissed that argument outright, accusing Talarico of showing up to pander to a Black audience and mocking what he described as politicians who put on a performance to appear sympathetic to Black voters. His co-host piled on, suggesting Talarico looked visibly uncomfortable during the interview. Carolla went on to call Talarico a phony and a race hustler, arguing that he and politicians like him view every issue through a racial lens.
The trial itself made national headlines earlier this year after a Texas jury convicted Anthony of stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf to death after a confrontation in a tent at a track meet. Witnesses testified that Anthony warned Metcalf before the attack, and Metcalf ultimately bled to death in his twin brother’s arms. Some media commentators later argued the all-white jury made the verdict unfair, given that Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white, sparking a broader national debate over race and the justice system.
Talarico echoed that argument in his own media appearance, saying that while he wasn’t an expert on the specifics of the case, the absence of Black jurors was, in his view, proof enough that the system isn’t working equally for Black Texans.
Carolla blasted that reasoning as absurd, arguing that any jury, regardless of race, would reach the same guilty verdict once presented with evidence that a man pulled a knife and fatally stabbed another person. He challenged Talarico’s underlying suggestion that a jury with Black members might have reached a different outcome, calling the implication both illogical and deeply insulting.
The fiery exchange is the latest example of conservative media figures pushing back hard against Democratic politicians accused of injecting race into cases where they argue the facts alone should determine the outcome, as the high-profile Texas Senate race continues to draw national attention.
