Former Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is locked in a tough battle to win back his old seat, says he will not support impeaching President Trump again if Democrats take control of Congress in next month’s election.

Brown twice voted to convict Trump on impeachment charges, in 2020 and 2021, before losing his reelection bid in 2024 to Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio. Now, as he attempts a comeback, Brown wants his party to steer clear of another impeachment fight should Democrats reclaim the House, and possibly the Senate, on Nov. 3.

“I can’t speak for everybody else, but I would not support an impeachment of Trump,” Brown told The Columbus Dispatch. “There’s simply no reason for that, no matter what happens in the midterms.”

The comments come as Brown finds himself in a neck-and-neck race with Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, in a state Trump carried with 55 percent of the vote in the 2024 presidential election. The president handily defeated Kamala Harris in Ohio by more than 11 percentage points.

Husted has worked to fire up Republican voters by hitting the campaign trail with Trump. The two appeared together at a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, on Monday evening, where the president praised the incumbent senator as “a great athlete,” a reference to Husted’s time as an All-American defensive back for the Division III Dayton Flyers.

Republicans are bracing for Democrats to launch yet another impeachment push against Trump if they capture the House, as political handicappers and Decision Desk HQ now project.

Several House Democrats have already introduced articles of impeachment against the president in the current Congress. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., who is poised to become the next Speaker, has refused to rule out another attempt.

“No, we haven’t ruled anything in and we haven’t ruled anything out in terms of impeachment,” Jeffries told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” in September.

House Democrats impeached Trump twice while holding the majority, in 2019 and 2021.

The first effort sought to remove him from office on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, alleging the president unlawfully pressured Ukrainian officials to influence the 2020 presidential election.

The second came on Jan. 13, 2021, when House Democrats and a handful of Republicans voted to impeach Trump, accusing him of inciting insurrection after a mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in a failed attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump was acquitted both times in the Senate, where Democrats needed 67 votes, or a two-thirds majority, to convict him and remove him from office or bar him from running for office again.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told conservative commentator Scott Jennings in a recent interview that Democrats would move immediately to impeach Trump a third time if they win control of the House.

“It’s guaranteed, probably on the first day – first or second day,” Johnson predicted. “Remember, they’ve already filed articles of impeachment in this Congress. And they’re raring to go.”
