A new poll has now revealed that a significant majority of U.S. voters oppose the government using artificial intelligence (AI) to make key decisions.

Specifically, 55% of respondents disagreed with the idea of the government employing AI to determine eligibility for benefits such as unemployment assistance, college tuition aid, and small business loans.

Meanwhile, only 31% supported the use of AI in these processes, and 15% were unsure or had no opinion.

Concerns about AI stem partly from a lack of understanding regarding the technology. Nearly 20% of those surveyed reported having never heard of popular AI tools like ChatGPT.

Experts suggest that these fears are valid, as the potential for AI to be misused in discriminatory ways raises alarms across the political spectrum.

Progressives often worry about bias affecting marginalized groups, while conservatives cite concerns about viewpoint discrimination.

The poll also indicated that 46% of voters believe the government should slow its integration of AI to protect taxpayers and federal employees from potential risks.

In contrast, nearly a third felt that the current pace of AI adoption is appropriate, and 22% advocated for a faster integration of the technology.

As discussions about AI’s role in government continue, many voters express apprehension about the government’s ability to regulate AI effectively.

Close to 60% of participants voiced concerns that the government would not implement sufficient regulations as AI chatbots become increasingly prevalent.

Additionally, nearly 80% expressed worries about the long-term impact of AI on younger generations. Overall, the poll underscores the need for informed dialogue and careful consideration regarding the integration of AI in public policy.
