A recent survey indicates that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is now perceived as the leading figure of the Democratic Party, with 26% of respondents identifying her as the “face” of the party.
Conducted by Co/efficient from May 7 to May 9, this poll surveyed 1,462 likely voters and reveals a notable divide in perceptions of party leadership.
The survey results show that Ocasio-Cortez’s influence far surpasses that of other prominent Democrats. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a close ally of Ocasio-Cortez, came in a distant second, while Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) followed with 8%.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris garnered 6%, with Pete Buttigieg and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries both receiving 5%. Other candidates, including Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) and California Governor Gavin Newsom, received even lower percentages.
Interestingly, the poll also revealed that 26% of respondents believe there is no single leader of the Democratic Party.
This lack of consensus underscores a fractured party landscape, with Ocasio-Cortez and the sentiment of disarray dominating the narrative. The survey carries a margin of error of 3.27%.
Ocasio-Cortez’s prominence comes amid heightened political scrutiny during President Donald Trump’s second term.
In a separate April survey by Yale University, she was noted as a leading contender for the 2028 presidential election, trailing only Harris, who received approximately 28% support compared to Ocasio-Cortez’s 21%.
The findings reflect Ocasio-Cortez’s rising star within the Democratic Party, particularly among younger voters who resonate with her progressive agenda.
Her recent engagements, including the “Fighting Oligarchy” tour alongside Sanders, have further solidified her status as a key player in contemporary politics.
Support for Ocasio-Cortez is particularly strong in her home state of New York, where a liberal firm, Data for Progress, reported that 55% of Democratic voters would support her in a primary challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
