As the two nations achieved a number of border security accords, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reportedly secured an agreement with the Trump administration to postpone the imposition of high tariffs, which were scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday, for a month.

President Trump stated that 10,000 more troops would be sent to the U.S.-Mexico border to halt the flow of illegal drugs and migrants, and Ms. Sheinbaum agreed to deploy them.

According to Ms. Sheinbaum on Monday, Mexico will receive assistance from the U.S. government to limit the flow of firearms back across the border, as well as at least a short-term reprieve from the general 25% tariffs that Trump announced on Saturday.

The agreement was made amid concerns that the actions would upset the global economy and cause financial markets all around the world to tremble. Two days prior, Trump had also proposed tariffs of 25% on Canada and 10% against China.

Trump’s fears about the flow of migrants and drugs, especially fentanyl, into the United States prompted him to announce the levies.

The president admitted over the weekend that his tariffs, which apply to nations that supply roughly one-third of the nation’s imports, could inflict “some pain” for consumers, even if he included a partial carve out for Canadian energy and oil exports.

The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has already declared retaliatory taxes of 25 percent on U.S. imports.

Trump tweeted on Monday that he had also spoken with Trudeau and that they would speak again in the afternoon.

China promised to take “corresponding countermeasures” to firmly safeguard its rights and interests and to bring a complaint against the United States at the World Trade Organization.

On Sunday, Mr. Trump also hinted that Europe would be his next target.
