Lara Trump suggested this week that the Trump family’s involvement in politics may not end with President Donald Trump, saying several members have considered public office and leaving the door open to a possible future presidential run of her own.
During a Wednesday appearance on “Pod Force One with Miranda Devine,” host Miranda Devine asked whether talk of “Trump 2028” could refer to a family member other than the president and whether Lara Trump herself would ever consider running for the White House.
The president’s daughter-in-law responded by reflecting on the past decade and the impact she says President Trump has had on the country.
“I have looked at my father-in-law over the past 11 almost 12 years now. And I’ve watched the impact that he’s been able to make in people’s lives,” she said. “And it’s amazing. Look, he’s dealt with hell … But I’ve also seen the good that can be done. And so it’s really inspired me and I think it’s inspired everyone in our family.”
Lara Trump revealed that she has twice considered running for a Senate seat and said she would not completely rule out a presidential bid in the future.
“So much so that I’ve considered running for a possible Senate seat. So I would never say never to anything,” she said.
While she did not commit to any specific plans, she emphasized that timing would be key.
“I do think if the time is right, I would consider something. And I don’t know what that would be and what opportunities might lie ahead for me,” she added. “But I would say that at this point, we’ve all kind of dipped our toe in the water of politics enough to know that it’s something I think that possibly interests many of us in our family.”
She acknowledged that Democrats may not welcome the idea of continued Trump family involvement in national politics.
“And I know the Democrats will love to hear that, that it may not end just with Donald Trump. But I do think the timing has to be right for all of us,” she said.
Her husband, Eric Trump, has also declined to rule out a presidential run. During a November episode of the same podcast, he said he would not close the door on the possibility.
Donald Trump Jr., however, has taken a different stance. In March, he told Mediaite he would not be running in 2028, citing his friendship with Vice President JD Vance and his efforts to support Vance’s nomination in 2024. In a May post on X, Trump Jr. reiterated that while he would “never 100% rule it out down the line,” he has “ZERO interest in running for office in 28 or anytime soon.”
Political commentators have speculated about potential 2028 matchups within the Republican Party. NewsNation contributor Chris Cillizza said during a December live stream that he believed Trump Jr. was the only Republican who could potentially defeat Vance for the GOP nomination, though he added he did not expect Trump Jr. to challenge the vice president.
President Trump himself suggested in August that Vance was “probably favored” to carry the Make America Great Again mantle in 2028. He also mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form.”
Vance addressed speculation of potential rivalry during an October appearance on the podcast, telling Devine there would be no “tension” with Rubio and calling the secretary of state his “best friend in the administration.”
As 2028 looms in the distance, Lara Trump’s remarks signal that political ambition within the Trump family remains alive — and that future campaigns may not be out of the question.
