A security breach at NBC’s Today show studios on Thursday prompted a swift response from security personnel after an intruder allegedly followed co-host Craig Melvin into 30 Rockefeller Plaza, approached him backstage, and was taken into custody by law enforcement.

The incident unfolded at approximately 9 a.m., when the unidentified individual reportedly made it past security and entered an unauthorized area of the building, according to TMZ.

The outlet reported that the man managed to reach a backstage area where he was asking for Today meteorologist Al Roker.

Instead, the individual encountered Melvin.

According to TMZ, the man lunged toward the Today co-host while shouting a racial slur. The outlet reported that the individual yelled the N-word during the encounter.

The intruder, whose identity has not been released, was quickly detained by security personnel and staff members before being arrested by law enforcement.

Despite the incident, Melvin and Roker appeared on the Today broadcast roughly 15 minutes later. According to TMZ, neither host addressed the security breach during the live program.

The incident was also not captured on the live Today broadcast, according to reports.

TMZ founder Harvey Levin, citing people associated with the Today show, said the security lapse had raised serious concerns inside the organization.

“Heads are going to roll because this security breach put the talent of the show at risk,” Levin said, according to the outlet.

Following the incident, Today issued a statement confirming that an unauthorized individual had entered a restricted area near Studio 1A before approaching Melvin.

“There was a security incident this morning at the TODAY show studio,” the statement said.

According to the show’s statement, “An individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A.”

The statement added that Melvin immediately alerted security after the individual approached him.

“The person approached anchor Craig Melvin, who alerted security,” the statement continued.

NBC said security personnel detained the individual before law enforcement took the person into custody.

“The individual was detained and taken into custody by law enforcement without further incident,” the statement said.

The network also emphasized that no physical confrontation occurred and that no one was injured during the incident.

“There was no altercation, and no one was injured,” the statement said.

NBC said Today is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities as the investigation continues.

“TODAY is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter,” the statement read.

The network also stressed that the safety of employees, on-air talent, staff members and guests remains a top priority.

“NBC and TODAY take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously,” the statement said.

In response to the breach, NBC confirmed it is reviewing both the incident itself and the security procedures currently in place at the studio.

“We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios,” the statement concluded.

The incident has drawn attention to security procedures at the network’s New York headquarters after the intruder was reportedly able to bypass security and enter an unauthorized backstage area before being stopped. Authorities have not publicly identified the individual, and the investigation remains ongoing.
