Federal authorities in Los Angeles reportedly arrested Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a Mexican national living in the United States illegally, following a violent encounter with law enforcement. The incident unfolded after Parias, known on TikTok as “Richard LA,” allegedly rammed his vehicle into federal vehicles during an attempted arrest. Agents responded with gunfire, striking Parias in the elbow. A deputy U.S. marshal was also injured by a ricocheting bullet.
“Ultimately, an agent opened fire, wounding Parias and a deputy US marshal, who was hit with a ricochet bullet,” Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essay said.
Parias had gained notoriety on social media for documenting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Los Angeles, often portraying himself as a community advocate and citizen journalist. Despite his unlawful status and the serious criminal allegations, Parias received public support from Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price, who described him as “a pillar of our community” and a “fearless citizen journalist.”
The arrest highlights a troubling trend of social media influencers using platforms to challenge U.S. immigration law while actively engaging in criminal or dangerous behavior.
Parias is not the first illegal immigrant content creator to face legal consequences. Earlier this year, Venezuelan influencer Leonel Moreno was deported after using TikTok to encourage illegal immigrants to occupy unclaimed properties. Moreno’s videos, which frequently displayed cash and mocked U.S. law enforcement, attracted national attention before authorities confirmed his removal in March.
Similarly, Leidy Tatiana Mafla-Martinez, a Colombian national known for organizing anti-ICE demonstrations and posting enforcement footage online, was deported in October after repeated violations of U.S. immigration law.
Federal officials have warned that such influencers not only flout the law but actively encourage others to defy it, raising concerns about public safety and the integrity of immigration enforcement.
Parias’ social media presence exemplifies how modern platforms can be weaponized to undermine federal law. By broadcasting confrontations with ICE agents, illegal immigrants can elevate themselves as local heroes while potentially inciting criminal activity and civil unrest.
Yet, support from elected officials like Price underscores the growing tension between some local political figures and federal authorities tasked with upholding the law.
Immigration experts warn that Parias’ arrest should serve as a reminder of the risks posed by glamorizing illegal behavior on social media.
Federal agencies maintain that no individual, regardless of social media fame, is above the law.
