U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee sharply criticized actor Javier Bardem on Monday after the Oscar winner shared a social media post suggesting Israel stood to benefit politically from last week’s mass migrant crossings into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.
Huckabee dismissed the allegation as baseless during an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, responding after host Piers Morgan highlighted an Instagram post Bardem had shared with his followers.
The post, written by author Miranda Vidak and reposted by Bardem, pushed back against descriptions by MAGA commentators that the crossings amounted to an “invasion” of Europe after tens of thousands of Moroccans overwhelmed the borders on Friday.
According to the text Bardem shared, Israel would politically benefit from “a weakened, destabilized Spain,” noting that Spain has been among Europe’s most outspoken critics of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Bardem has also publicly criticized Israel’s military campaign.
Morgan asked Huckabee for his reaction to the actor’s decision to amplify the claims on social media.
“It sounds like Javier needs to stick to reading a script that someone else wrote. He’s not very good at coming up with his own ideas,” Huckabee said. “That’s ridiculous. To say that somehow this is a U.S.-Israel conspiracy and that’s why all those young men flooded to the coast, it’s nonsense.”
The ambassador went on to ridicule the allegation, arguing that blaming the United States and Israel for the migrant crossings stretched credibility beyond reason.
“I don’t know what’s next,” Huckabee said. “Israel and the U.S. are gonna be accused of the joint kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby back in the [19]20s. Maybe the downing of the Hindenburg?”
“Where does this stop?” he added.
Morgan later asked Huckabee who he believed was actually responsible for organizing the large-scale migrant crossings into Ceuta.
Rather than offering an alternative explanation, Huckabee said he was unwilling to speculate without evidence.
“Honestly, Piers, I wouldn’t have a theory because I think it’s really ridiculous for me or, frankly, anyone else who doesn’t have any facts about why they came to just suddenly invent something,” he said.
Huckabee argued that neither the United States nor Israel has any reason to orchestrate such an operation, saying both countries are already dealing with significant challenges of their own.
“The U.S. and Israel both have plenty on their plates right now,” he said. “Neither country needs to be inventing some ridiculous conspiracy theory, or more importantly, actually orchestrating the moving of almost 50,000 people from one place to the other.”
He concluded by again dismissing the claims contained in the Instagram post, saying they do not hold up under scrutiny.
“Really, they need to get a better kind of argument because that one simply falls apart,” Huckabee said.
The exchange came after Bardem reshared the post claiming Israel would benefit politically from instability in Spain following Friday’s mass migrant crossings into Ceuta, a claim Huckabee repeatedly rejected as unfounded during his interview with Morgan.
