The Houston Police Officers’ Union is now calling on New York City police officers to relocate to Texas following the election of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor.

“NYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani?” the union’s new recruitment ad asks. Mamdani, 34, a Ugandan-born Muslim and longtime progressive activist, has pledged to send mental health professionals instead of police to certain crisis calls and to uphold New York’s sanctuary city policy. He previously supported efforts to “defund the police.”

Houston Police Union President Doug Griffith said Mamdani’s platform “poses a direct threat to law enforcement in New York City.” He added, “We believe socialism is going to be bad for law enforcement in New York City. There is opportunity here in Houston… you can actually do police work and be supported by our mayor and our city council.”

The union’s pitch emphasizes Houston’s lower cost of living and “competitive pay,” targeting officers frustrated with what they see as an anti-police political climate in New York.

Mamdani’s old social media posts resurfaced after an NYPD officer’s killing, including one declaring, “We don’t need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.” Despite his rhetoric, Mamdani has since been assigned an NYPD security detail.

A pre-election poll found deep concern over his candidacy: roughly 9 percent of city residents said they would “definitely” leave if he won, and another 25 percent said they would consider moving.
