Texas Governor Greg Abbott responded vigorously to derogatory remarks made by Representative Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), who referred to him as “Governor Hot Wheels” at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles.
Crockett’s comments, which seemed to mock Abbott’s disability—he has been in a wheelchair since 1984 due to a serious accident—sparked significant backlash.
During an appearance on Fox News’ Hannity, Abbott dismissed Crockett’s jab as part of a larger failure of the Democratic Party, stating, “It’s another day and another disaster by the Democrats.”
He asserted that they lack vision or policy and claimed they have “nothing to sell but hate,” which he believes is being rejected by the public.
He emphasized that Texas will remain a Republican stronghold and pointed to the state’s successes as evidence of effective governance.
In response to the criticism, Crockett attempted to clarify her comments on social media, saying her remarks were not aimed at Abbott’s disability.
Instead, she claimed they were directed at his handling of migrant transportation into communities led by Black mayors.
However, GOP lawmakers, including Representative Randy Weber (R-TX), are pushing for a censure resolution against Crockett for what they deem discriminatory remarks, noting her history of mocking Abbott’s condition.
While Crockett wants to shift the narrative, Abbott’s supporters remain steadfast in their defense, framing her comments as disrespectful.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions in Texas politics and raises questions about the treatment and respect for individuals with disabilities in political discourse.
