In a recent essay published in Teen Vogue, Leah Juliett, a former staffer for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, reportedly criticized Democratic leadership for alienating younger voters through a centrist pivot on key issues, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ rights.
Juliett pointed to comments made by California Governor Gavin Newsom, who suggested that the party’s support for transgender rights may have gone “too far,” as evidence of this troubling trend.
Juliett expressed concern that the Democratic Party’s attempt to appeal to centrist voters compromises its support for marginalized communities.
She recalled her past work producing a video showcasing the importance of inclusive military service for transgender individuals during Trump’s administration.
Now, she sees that Democrats, including Schumer, lack a unified and supportive stance on transgender rights, which feels harmful rather than helpful.
Highlighting the disconnect between party leadership and the younger generation, she argued that compromises on issues like climate change, student debt, and healthcare are causing disillusionment.
Young people, she stated, are seeking urgency, empathy, and courage from their leaders—not half-measures that treat fundamental rights as negotiable.
Juliett lamented that this shift has led to estrangement among young voters who once trusted the Democrats to advocate for progressive change.
Reflecting on her experiences in Washington, she emphasized that the party’s failure to align with the values of younger constituents is evident and damaging.
She concluded by advocating for a return to progressive figures such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, asserting that Democrats need to embrace a more robust and principled approach in order to regain the trust and support of younger voters.
Juliett’s final thoughts underscored her feelings of disillusionment and her belief that many share her sentiments within the party.
